Argument and Rhetorical Analysis Games for Secondary ELA
This bundle of argument and rhetoric games for secondary ELA contains SEVEN unique games that target the skills of argumentation in a fun and high-interest format.
The games included in this bundle are:
Rhetorical Devices BINGO Game
In this game, students fill out BINGO cards with rhetorical devices, and they have to identify devices used in quotations read by the teacher. Five in row WINS the round! This game tests students' ability to identify rhetorical devices in texts.
Would You Rather? Card Game
In this game, students get into groups and take turns drawing cards that contain "Would you rather?" questions. Students have to argue their answers and support them with sound reasoning and/or evidence. The group decides whether or not the answers are sufficient, and the person with the most points at the end of the game, WINS!
Rhetoric: The Board Game
I have designed a board game that tests students' abilities to identify rhetorical devices, give convincing arguments, and also give their own examples of devices. Students must select an avatar and race for the "Rhetorical Triangle" at the center of the board to win! Oh and... there's a twist... the person to the right decides how many spaces you get to move! Strategy is part of the game. Students will have fun trying to outwit their opponents while practicing argumentation.
The Great Debate! Argument Game
This game contains three different rounds with three different debate questions. Students are to fill out their debate charts ahead of the debate and then practice arguing BOTH sides of the debate questions. At the end, they will write an argumentative paragraph in which they take a side on the debate question, and they will use their rhetorical skills to argue their thesis.
Devil's Advocate Game
In this game, the teacher will read aloud thematic claims from a list while groups practice counterclaims by disagreeing with each claim that is read aloud. Groups only have two minutes to construct their counterclaims and earn points for logical arguments.
Hot Seat Argument Game
In this game, students use dice to determine which question to answer on the Argument Matrix. They then argue their side of the debate question using at least two sound reasons to support their positions. Groups keep track of points, and the last student remaining, WINS!
This bundle of games is an excellent way to reinforce key rhetorical skills in a high-interest format that can reinforce writing/reading workshops and also review necessary skills for testing.
Students are sure to love these games throughout the year as they practice both oral and written arguments!
